It is a regenerated cellulosic fiber obtained from natural sources like wood pulp, cotton linters and related agricultural products.
Physical properties:
Chemical properties:
Effect of bleaching: It is damaged by strong oxidizing agents.
Effect of Organic solvents: it has the resistance towards organic solvents.
Action of soaps: use of poorly made soap and improper use of soap leads to cause rancidity odor in rayon fiber.
Mildew and insects: it does not have the resistance towards mildew and insects. It causes discolorations, stains, loss in strength and luster.
Dyes: can be dyed with direct, vat and Sulphur dyes.
Difference between viscose and rayon: viscose made from plant fibers through cellulose xanthation process. Rayon made from wood pulp through cellulose immersion process.
Structure: structure of viscose rayon is similar to cotton. But the polymer chains of viscose rayon are shorter than cotton.
Degree of polymerization of rayon: 400-700
Modified viscose rayon:
Tyre yarn
High wet modulus yarn
Polynosic yarn
Super high wet modulus yarn
Uses:
viscose rayon is used for making apparel.
Used for making curtains, future covering, table cloths, cushions, bedspreads, quilt covers, blankets, lace, transport furnishing, tire cords and sportswear.
